Real estate in Telluride offers the best of the best, but affordable homes are also for sale. Telluride is the county seat of San Miguel County and is best known for its unique southwestern culture and world-class ski resort. The town of Telluride and the areas removed from the ski resort offer the best opportunity for homeownership that won't break the bank. Living in Telluride provides the chance to enjoy the events, restaurants, and overall vibe of the town, which has gone from a silver-mining town to a ski village to the adventure capital of southwestern Colorado.

Many existing homes for sale and vacant lots for building a home take advantage of the region's beautiful terrain. Telluride sits in a box canyon, surrounded by steep forested mountains and cliffs. Several homes offer ski-in, ski-out accessibility on the eastern side of the resort. (Mountain Village is on the resort's western edge.) Luxury homes for sale with ski-in, ski-out access commonly have five or more bedrooms and several thousand square feet of living space. Well-established homes are routinely replaced with new builds, although a few properties have been extensively remodeled.

In addition to enhanced living spaces and immediate ski access, private homes for sale in Telluride have added amenities and features like a chef's kitchen, a grand dining room with views of the mountains, a master and guest master suite with improved bathrooms with steam showers, soaking tubs, or jetted Jacuzzi tubs. Properties for sale often have a deck with a multi-person hot tub, a fire pit or fireplace, or overhead heating to make outdoor entertaining comfortable.

Telluride also has several upscale condominium complexes with condos or multi-level townhouses for sale. Most condos have three or four bedrooms, perhaps more, and a few residences come with only one or two bedrooms. Only a few studio condos are for sale, and they don't last long on the open market. There are homes in the tens of millions of dollars, and a few condos can be had for around $2 million.

Neighborhood highlights:

• A free gondola connects Telluride with Mountain Village. Telluride is located on the east side of the ski resort, while Mountain Village is on its western edge.
• Telluride was founded in 1878 and was first known as Columbia. It was later renamed Telluride after the gold telluride minerals found in other parts of the state. Ironically, no gold telluride minerals were ever found near Telluride.
• The Telluride Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is one of Colorado's 20 National Historic Landmarks. The district includes a large portion of downtown Telluride.
• Although considered a snow skiing haven, Telluride has made a name for itself as a summer destination as well. There is amazing rafting, paddle boarding, boating, and fishing in the vicinity of Telluride, along with hand-gliding, off-roading, horseback riding, alpine coasters, hiking, biking, yoga, tennis, and championship golf.
